He was born on April 21, 1936, in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA, asJames Clayton Dobson Jr., to Myrtle Georgia and James C. Dobson, Sr.
In 1967, Dobson earned his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.
In 1970, he published his first book titled – ”Dare to Discipline.”
In 1975, Dr. Dobson published his second book, ”What wives wish their husbands knew about women.”
Focus on the Family

In 1977, he founded Focus on the Family (FOTF), a Christian organization dedicated to helping families thrive. It is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Until 2003, he served as the sole leader of Focus on the Family.
In 1981, Dr. Dobson founded the Family Research Council with the mission ”to advance faith, family, and freedom in public policy and the culture from a Christian worldview.”
In 1982, he was chosen as Layman of the Year by the National Association of Evangelicals.
In 1984, he published another book entitled – ”Emotions Can You Trust Them.”
It was followed in 1986 by ”Temper Your Child’s Tantrums” and ”Dr. Dobson Answers Your Questions about Feelings and Self-Esteem.”
In 2008, he was inducted into The National Radio Hall of Fame.
In 2010, Dr. Dobson left Focus on the Family.
