Obsidian Frox are massive, greedy monsters that dwell in the Depths below Hyrule’s surface. They are unique to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and are intimidating creatures. These building-sized cyclops frogs are quite the sight (even in the dark) and aren't sneaking up on anyone, however figuring out how to approach one can be daunting. But with the right strategies, you can master the art of defeating them.

In this Tears of the Kingdom guide, we will teach you everything you need to know about the Obsidian Frox so you can clear the Depths of these nasty creatures, until the next Blood Moon, at least.

Official Description: A large monster that dwells in the Depths. Has legs even more powerful that its green-colored counterpart, and it can leap from afar to capture distant enemies. Its large mouth allows it to swallow whatever it hungers for in one gulp.

Frox Locations in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Obsidian Frox can only be found in the Depths below the surface of Hyrule. Below we've highlighted some easy-to-get-to Frox, along with a map of all Frox locations. Note that this includes the Blue-White Frox as well.

If you’re specifically seeking out a battle with an Obsidian Frox, you will find one just near of the Katenim Lightroot.

The exact coordinates are 0535, 3459, -0591.

Recommended Gear

The Obsidian Frox lurks in the Depths, so any type of Gloom Resistance or Heart Restoring consumables are a great addition to your inventory in this case. If you’re going Obsidian Frox hunting, make sure you take some, if not all, of the following items with you:

  • The Depths Armor Set
  • Elixirs or food with Gloom Resistance buff
  • Elixirs or food made with Sundelions to restore your broken hearts
  • A strong bow
  • Arrows
  • Keese Eyeballs
  • Bomb Flowers
  • A strong melee weapon, preferably a hammer

Gloom damage saps your health and renders your hearts useless. You can’t restore them unless you visit a Lightroot, return to the surface, or consume meals or elixirs made with Sundelions. Elixirs or food made with Dark Clumps make you resistant to Gloom damage in the first place, so consider bringing some with you whenever you’re traveling throughout the Depths.

How to Defeat an Obsidian Frox

The Depths Armor Set gives you extra resistance to Gloom damage, especially when upgraded. It is hard to collect, however, and involves finding and purchasing it from the Bargainer Statues around the Depths.

Obsidian Frox are much larger than the regular Frox you come across in the Depths, but they are just as greedy. Unfortunately, instead of preferring to eat Brightbloom Seeds, the Obsidian Frox prefers to eat you. Thankfully, you can use this to your advantage during battle.

To defeat an Obsidian Frox, you have to climb onto its back and destroy each of the ore deposits that you will find there. It is immune to attacks anywhere else on its body, but it does have one other weak point: its eye.

Fusing a Keese eye to your arrow makes it much easier to hit the Obsidian Frox directly in the eye. So if you have any of them in your inventory, feel free to use them. Once you hit its eye with an arrow, the Obsidian Frox will fall to the ground for a moment, allowing you to climb onto its back and start destroying the ore deposits you will find there.

The Obsidian Frox will buck you off its back eventually. When it does, pull out your glider and soar around to the front of the beast. Equip your bow to make time slow down and hit it in the eye with an arrow once again. Then you can simply glide back onto its back and continue destroying the ore deposits. Repeat this process a couple of times, and victory will be yours.

There are quite a few ore deposits on an Obsidian Frox, so you will have to mount it several times to smash all of them. Once all of the ore deposits are destroyed, so is the beast.

Alternative Strategies

While the above strategy is the easiest way to take down an Obsidian Frox and can allow you to complete the battle without taking any damage, it is not the only way to achieve victory in a fight against an Obsidian Frox.

Your main mission is to climb onto the beasts back, and there are other ways to do so without your bow and arrows. So if you’ve accidentally used all your arrows spreading Brightbloom Seeds throughout the Depths, you can still go up against an Obsidian Frox and win.

The next best way to take down an Obsidian Frox is to use its own moves against it. Obsidian Frox are incredibly greedy beasts, and a few of its moves involve it trying to eat you. You can take these opportunities to throw Bomb Fruits into the Obsidian Frox’s mouth. The Bomb Flowers will explode inside the beast, causing it to fall to the ground and allowing you to mount it.

If you’re more of a fan of long-distance attacks, you can also circle the beast, shooting its ore deposits with bomb arrows to defeat one without mounting it at all.

Attack Patterns

The Obsidian Frox that patrol the Depths have a couple of different attacks up their sleeves that they can use in any order.

Obsidian Frox will lunge at you like the smaller Frox do. It can cover a pretty large distance when it does this, but it can be avoided by sprinting out of the way.

Obsidian Frox will also try to eat you by jumping at you with their mouth open. Take out your bow and shoot a Bomb Flower into its mouth when it does this to ground it and give you a chance to climb onto its back.

Obsidian Frox can also create a vortex when they open their mouth in an attempt to suck you up like a vacuum cleaner. When this happens, shoot or throw a Bomb Flower into its mouth to incapacitate the beast and climb onto its back to hit the ore deposits.
