What is a good Magic deck ratio? ›

For a ratio on how many of each card type to include in a deck, you're looking at about 36 playables like creatures and spells to 24 lands. Of those 36 playables you should split it down the middle between creatures and spells.

100.2a In constructed play (a way of playing in which each player creates their own deck ahead of time), each deck has a minimum deck size of 60 cards. A constructed deck may contain any number of basic land cards and no more than four of any card with a particular English name other than basic land cards.

Playing a card means announcing the spell and paying its mana cost. That takes lands. The basic rule of thumb is that you play 17-18 lands in a 40 card deck, and 24 lands in a 60 card deck. If you are playing more than a couple cards with mana costs of five or higher, increase the number of lands.

However, a general rule of thumb for a balanced deck is to have about 20 to 24 creatures. This allows for a good mix of creatures and non-creature spells, ensuring you have enough threats on the board while still having room for other important cards like spells, lands, and artifacts.

MTG is a game of variance, and not even the pro players win more than 65-70% of their games. The best decks in the metagame usually have a 55-60% win rate overall.

The general way you lay out a mana curve is from left to right with a pile for each converted mana cost, with the lowest converted mana cost cards in the leftmost pile, the highest on the right, and a pile for each other mana cost in between in ascending order.

Each player has a maximum hand size, which is normally seven cards. A player may have any number of cards in their hand, but as part of their cleanup step, the player must discard excess cards down to the maximum hand size.

As a good rule of thumb, most decks chase a fairly even mana curve, covering the full range of card costs, but with a concentration of three- or four-cost cards. You'll want to play a card every turn, and this distribution helps prevent a glut of high- or low-cost cards coming to you at an inopportune time.

Many color combinations in Magic happen to work well together consistently, and the most aggressive of those combinations is Red/Green.

Tier 1 : The most dominant decks of the format since the release of Outlaws at Thunder Junction. This implies the percentage of victories, presence in the meta, and favorable games. Tier 2 : These will be solid decks with relevant presence in the OTJ Bo1 meta.

What should a magic deck consist of? ›

Your deck needs to consist of at least 60 cards. You can have no more than 4 of a given card aside from basic lands. Go ahead and have 23 forests, but you can't have that many Llanowar Elves. You can have a 15 card sideboard that will allow you to swap cards out of your main deck between rounds.

There are a number of ways the calculate or estimate this more specifically, but a quick rule of thumb is that basic mana should make up approximately one-third of their Magic: The Gathering deck, or 20 to 24 cards in a 60-card deck.

Most will say 24-28 lands is the best ratio depending on your deck, given you stick close or exactly to the 60 card deck minimum. But it may depend on your playstyle. Aggro decks for example with low cost threats, which may not need to hit a land drop every turn, may even go down to 20-18 lands.

Whatever size you use, keep in mind that Magic cards have a 5:7 aspect ratio. Finally, note that most card images come as simple rectangles without the traditional rounded edges; to remedy this, add a 12px border-radius to the card image.
